THE MONTPEYROUX APPELLATION

Montpeyroux means ‘stony hill’. The village borders two types of landscapes: the chalky foothills of the ‘Causses du Larzac’ – a limestone plateau– and the alluvial plain of the river Hérault.

The estate creation

My transformation from city dweller to winemaker was prompted by love at first sight; I fell in love with my first vines, on the highest point of the Causse de Montpeyroux, and a 17th century sheep barn.

Standing tall against the wind, bathed in sunshine,
La Jasse (Castel was the former owner’s name) looks out across the Hérault valley, watching over the Grenache vines and scrubland at its feet. My 7 hectare vineyard is made up of a century-old Cinsault near the village of Arboras, an ancient Carignan tucked away amongst the Olivettes, a purebred Syrah on the edge of an oak forest, and a goblet-trained Grenache in the heart of the Seranne landscape.

In theory there was no particular reason why I should become a
winemaker, yet everything lead me to this. A former journalist, teacher and writer, my growing desire to make wine and own a domaine came to fruition in 1998. Since then, every day has been magical, sensual, a wonderful discovery, and a learning process which I love to share. For me, the word “culture” has found its roots again… its humanity, its never-ending story.

The terroirs

The Terroir

The terroir in Montpeyroux owes its originality to its terraced soils facing due south, its ancient vines and its particularly windy climate which ensures excellent sanitary conditions of the vines.

Le Causse (350m high): 1,25 ha Syrah, 1,25 ha Grenache (25 years old)

Very ancient soils (10,000 years old)with fossils mixed with limestone debris. The soils are reddish, deep and little fertile. The vine pushes its roots deep into the fault , breaking the parent rock to reach water resources.

This plateau was cleared and planted with vines in 1983. The clay and limestone soil is deep and strewn with big white stones and black volcanic stones. This place, desert and austere on cold windy days or wonderfully welcoming on sunny days, is magic. It is the site of the Jasse Castel, a former 17th century sheepfold, whose massive walls dominate the causse. Thyme, rosemary, lavender and broom grow on the acres not planted with vines. It is the area in Montpeyroux with the latest ripening, giving wines particular finesse and freshness.

Le Goulou:2,8ha Syrah (10 to 20 years old)

Marly soils, with a chalky deep base, a clay and limestone surface and a sandy silt texture mixed with small chalky pebbles for the young Syrah. For the older Syrah the soils are deeper, more clayish and more difficult to work, but with good resources

This largely chalky terroir gives a very early ripening, along with a pleasant freshness. The Syrah reveals aromas of chocolate and spices.

Les Intillières: 1,1ha Cinsault (100 years old)

Riss soils (high terraces), made of ancient alluvial deposits, with a chalky base. Sand and small pebble texture, allowing good filtration.

This old Cinsault keeps surprising us. Small berries, small yields, very ripe fruit with complex aromas all go towards denying the bias against this varietal. Its soil made of small pebbles and the non-trellised gobelet-training adds to the pleasure in cultivating this parcel.

Les Combariolles: 1.3 Grenache (6 years old and 1 year)

Same type of soil as in the Intillières, with bigger pebbles.

Our very first plantation in Grenache, with a little productive clone, next to a 40-are lot to be planted in the near future.

Les Grillières: 0,4ha Carignan (20 years old)

Same type of soil, with more marls and fewer stones on the surface.

Surrounded by olive-trees, this Carignan is added to the ‘Font du Griffe’. It contributes to the typicity of Montpeyroux wines.

Bosc Vieil: 0,5ha Grenache (50 years old)

Chalky base ground, surface developed on soft limestone with numerous stones.

The soil is covered with round shingles and, to the owner’s delight, 4 rows of Muscat and Clairette make their way into the plot of Grenache

Photographs

A small estate, 7 hectares,

Each plot is a hymn to beauty,

Wines are the most faithful teller of the terroir’s wealth,

Witnesses of space and time, bearers of the year’s memories,

Rain, sun and wind, cold, heat,

Adventurers, eager for well-anchored roots, come there to regain strength

With the right gesture, the century-old gesture,

Giving their lives, their energy, their madness,

For the sake of surprise, shiver, wonder,

To offer, share, give a bottle

Where heady sensuality blends with opulence and asperity,

Refinement and vivacity,

And for the sake of game,

The game of life
